Fentanyl Awareness Day - Tuesday May 7th, 2024
Posted: May 7, 2024
SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. —
On Fentanyl Awareness Day, we want to highlight the risk to our first responders, including law enforcement officers, paramedics, and firefighters, who face a heightened risk of exposure to fentanyl during the course of their duties.
Fentanyl exposure poses significant risks to first responders due to its potency and potential for accidental contact.
First responders can be harmed by fentanyl through various routes of exposure, including:
- Inhalation: Fentanyl can be aerosolized during handling, leading to inhalation of the drug particles. Inhalation is one of the most common routes of exposure for first responders, as even small amounts of airborne fentanyl can lead to adverse effects.
- Skin Contact: Fentanyl can be absorbed through the skin, especially if it is in powder form or if the skin is broken. Skin contact can occur during the handling of fentanyl-containing substances or contaminated surfaces.
- Mucous Membrane Exposure: Fentanyl can also be absorbed through mucous membranes, such as the eyes, nose, and mouth. This can happen if first responders touch their face or rub their eyes after handling fentanyl.
- Accidental Ingestion: Ingestion of fentanyl can occur if first responders inadvertently touch their mouth or consume food or drink that has been contaminated with fentanyl particles.
- Injection: While less common, accidental needle sticks or injections with needles contaminated with fentanyl can also pose a risk of exposure to first responders.
